The Cat Protection Society of Victoria

The Cat Protection Society of Victoria has been helping stray, wild and unwanted cats and kittens since 1947. It is the largest cat welfare organisation in Australia, and one of the three main animal welfare shelters in Victoria. The Society receives some 15,000 cats and kittens annually of which it rehouses approx 4000. Of the 15,000 received, approx 9000 are wild unowned cats that have sadly been living a borderline existence in the Melbourne suburbs. The Society's hostel is located in Greensborough and has the facilities to house 300 cats and kittens at any one time. The Society's staff have expertise in all feline welfare issues and the Society is recognised for its expertise in all aspects of cat care and management - from veterinary matters to the issues of stray cat management.

The Society has an active fostering system that extends our ability to care for very young kittens and adults that require special attention. As such some 1,000 cats and kittens are saved and rehoused through this scheme every year.

The Society relies heavily on donations from the public, membership fees and legacies to continue its extensive operations. Several fundraising events are held throughout the year, the largest of which is our annual Open Day in February. This is very well attended and some 150 cats and kittens find new homes on this day.

The Society provides several services to the community which include a feline veterinary clinic that operates at welfare rates and provides a very heavily discounted desexing service to encourage owners to have their cats desexed; cat receival and adoption services; cat management services to local Councils; educational programs to schools and community groups to increase awareness of responsible cat ownership and representation on Government committees to improve cat welfare legislation.

As described each year our shelter receives 15,000 cats and kittens and deals on a daily basis with the realities of the cat problem - we receive 150-300 complaints daily re cats. We have therefore developed considerable expertise in the field of cat welfare; in dealing with and addressing the issues that cats raise in our community; in the collection and trapping of unowned cats (some 9,000/yr) and in the care, handling, biology and disease of all types of cats and kittens.
