Victoria’s largest dedicated shelter for cats to open it’s doors

Victorian cat lovers are in for a treat, with the state’s largest dedicated shelter for cats opening in Melbourne’s north east. The Cat Protection Society moved to the new state-of-the-art facility in mid November 2020 offering adoptions and vet clinic consults by appointment only.

From Thursday 7th of January, 2021, the facility will be open to the general public with “walk in” adoptions available weekdays from 10am-4pm. Adoptions by appointment (only) will be available on a Saturday and Sunday between 10am-3pm. To apply for a weekend appointment, please complete an adoption application form by clicking here.

Appointments are still required for vet clinic consults.

The Society’s Chief Executive Officer, Ian Crook said that he and his team were thrilled to be opening the new Shelter.

“This is an incredible opportunity to help more cats in need and engage with the local community,” said Ian.

“We can now accommodate short term refuge for over 200 more cats in the Shelter than in our temporary facility and have also been able to significantly expand our veterinary services.”

“It will also allow us to do more educational initiatives, to assist the community in understanding what is involved in responsible pet care,” he said.

Mr Crook said the CPSV has been in operation for more than 70 years, and the new shelter is an exciting milestone in its history offering the best care for cats.

“The goals are very simple,” he said. “Our mission is to find new homes for as many surrendered and stray cats as possible.”

The café at the new shelter (to be opened in 2021) will be a warm invitation for the local community to pop in for a visit and cuddle with the shelter’s precious inhabitants. Meanwhile, an outdoor courtyard with cat enclosures, fully-stocked retail store selling products for cats and their human companions, and a community classroom will also form part of the new premises.

The new shelter is located at 200 Elder Street, Greensborough (next door to the Shelter’s temporary facilities).
