Get Involved
We welcome help from cat lovers because at times our work here is simply overwhelming.
There are a number of ways you can help;
Adopt a cat
Every cat deserves a home and every cat that finds a home is one which survives at a time when so many sadly have to be put down. If you follow our simple procedure and come to our shelter you will be able to find the perfect pet and enrich your life and theirs.
You could also become a foster parent for kittens. (for more information about or fostering program please email us
Make a donation or bequest
The Cat Protection Society relies solely on memberships, legacies and donations for its day to day existence. Donations are tax deductible. Please help by giving if you can via the donation page on this website.
You can also donate services, or materials to help maintain the hostel or donate goods or time for fundraising events.
Information of making a bequest can be found here.
Become a member
By joining our society you make a difference of the lives of cats across Victoria, it costs $15 per year for a single, $25 for a family, $8 for pensioners and students or $150 to become a life member. You will be invited to our fundraisers and other events and be updated about our society through our magazine “Nine Lives”. You can download a membership application here
Volunteer
Volunteers play a vital role in supporting CPS staff with day to day care of cats and kittens. Recently the Volunteer program has been restructured opening up more opportunities for volunteers to be involved. Although previous experience in animal handling is not a pre-requisite to becoming a CPS volunteer, commitment to the society and its aims are essential. CPS ha a recruitment process for volunteers and it includes attending on the information sessions held throughout the year. The minimum age is 15 years.
Volunteers can provide support in many ways and we recognise that assisting directly with the cats and kittens is not suitable for everyone.
We also need help in office assistance, including data entry, photocopying, reception etc. With fundraising and awareness events such as cat and kitten adoption day usually held in February or our annual garage sale usually held in October.
You can also help in the storeroom and laundry, shredding paper, preparing bedding and washing and drying.
Training is provided for some tasks and there is always a supervisor or staff member to answer questions and address concerns.

Information sessions and recruitment process
Our information sessions are held throughout the year and attending one is the first step to becoming a volunteer. To make a booking please call our office or email us. Please provide full contact details when making an enquiry online.
After attending the information session prospective volunteers are invited to an interview with our volunteer coordinator, usually within two weeks of the information session. Some volunteer support roles are more popular than others therefore not always available at the time of application. Other options can be discussed at the interview. Where training is required for a volunteer support role it is provided and undertaken prior to commencement as a volunteer. Volunteers are a valuable asset to the CPS
