Kitten Tsunami

“And the wave came from nowhere and hit with indescribable force, drowning all those in its path”.

This description used by a tsunami survivor reminds me of our experience with kitten season every year. Kittens in their thousands are left in our care.

There is probably no group of people who enjoy the playfulness, the fun, the pure innocent beauty contained in litters of kittens than us. At the Cat Protection Society we love cats, that is our reason for being here and cute little kittens capture our hearts. They jump and play, they wrestle with each other, get into all sorts of mischief with their curiosity and when tired, they curl up on our laps and purr or head butt us for a pat.

At this time of year new litters arrive on our doorstep daily. When we arrive for work, there are often some little ones waiting for us in the cages outside our gates. Someone has dropped them off, knowing - or at least hoping - that we will look after them. Other times, families bring them in because their cat has had kittens and they don’t know what to do with them. We take the kittens and insist the mother gets desexed to prevent this happening again. (If everyone made sure their cat was desexed they would certainly save lives. Find out more about this at the Cat Crisis Coalition’s website catcrisis.com.au)

Still, other times the kittens come to us via council officers because someone has dumped them. Whatever way they come in, at this time of year the kittens just keep coming. Cats have an amazing ability to breed and in the hot weather they certainly prove it beyond doubt.

Adopt a Kitten

Inundated with cute kittens of all shapes and sizes, we end up with a bigger range of feline babies for adoption than any pet shop. These kittens are an excellent purchase in that they are all currently vaccinated, micro-chipped, desexed, dewormed, defleaed and come with a two-week health cover and cost less than a pet shop. An adoption of a shelter kitten also saves a life as it creates space for another in the adoption pens.

Vist the Cat Protection Society Shelter

The sadness and confusion that comes with this Kitten “tsunami” is that we know there will not be enough homes for all of these beautiful babies and we need your help to change this.

So, if you know anyone who wants a lovely pet, make sure you tell them that the Cat Protection Society has the most beautiful kittens for adoption and help us save lives. Also, if you know anyone whose cat is not desexed, get them to do it now so that the “tsunami” becomes a gentle sea that we are all able to safely navigate.

Lots of purrs,

Carole

Hi I am looking to adopt a kitten in a few weeks, would it be suitable to come in now to choose and pay for one so that it can be desexed etc or should I wait until closer to the date that I am wanting to bring it home?
Also I have allergies but have had shots in the past as I have always had cats. Is there a certain type that will trigger fewer allergy symptons that you would recommend?
